Since you didn’t ask, I’m more than happy to share my highly unscientific, definitely flawed, and pretty reliable (trademark pending) method for selecting a Romantic Comedy.  I look for one with an IMDB rating between 6 and 6.9 (and between 5 and 6 if the cast is less than 99% white because internal bias and racism are everywhere), but with a Metacritic rating solidly in the yellow range. Higher scores will likely result in a movie that is an indie film marketed as a Rom-Com or a Rom-Com with desperate indie aspirations; sometimes they’re just dramas. Indie movies and dramas are great, but when you’re in the mood for something like The Holiday and you end up with Take This Waltz or (if you’re very unlucky) Le Divorce it’s a real disappointment. Scores lower than this range are often movies with such poor acting, editing, lighting, and writing that it can be hard to passively enjoy the escapist schlock for which you were searching. I have more rules and there are some nuances, but I’m not going to share all my trade secrets with you. My husband, a mathematician, offered to collect data and test this theory for me. I told him to get lost.
